The 20 best music festivals in Europe

Start packing those sunglasses and that swimwear for the annual pilgrimage to escape the shocking weather at Britain’s festivals.

The pound has collapsed but there’s still sure to be a large contingent of Brits heading to sunnier climes for their music festival fix this year.

Some countries, especially in eastern Europe, are still much cheaper than the UK and ticket prices often cost half that of the larger homegrown affairs.

From Serbia to Spain, Belgium to Bulgaria, music fans are looking for ever more exotic and alternative places to party.

There’s dozens of events across Europe to tempt intrepid music fans out of their soggy comfort zones, and an increasing number of transport options and tour companies willing to help. At the end you’ll find information on companies that can help you get to the more far flung options.

The list includes five changes from last year’s selection, and they are spread even farther and wider. Of course the lineups are different, with some of this season’s famous bands slogging their way around lots of the bigger events – along with some nice surprises and more quirky affairs on offer.

BELGIUM
Rock Werchter - July 2-5

One of Europe’s oldest festivals, the 35th Rock Werchter festival has an impressive lineup, with big name acts ranging from Coldplay and the Killers to Elbow and the Prodigy.

Not exactly exotic but easy to get to, it’s a short hop by Eurostar to Brussels and on to Leuven where shuttle buses will whisk you to the site.
